Studia Generalia - Designing for public sector transformation

The public sector is notoriously in need for a radical transformation. Service Design has been contributing to this end since its origins, working both from within and from the outside of institutions. While there is a growing awareness of the potentials of Design approaches, and a specific demand to build design capabilities within public organizations and government, Service Design needs upgrading to better address the complexity of this challenge.

This presentation will touch upon some of the recent applications of Service Design in the public sector, reflecting on the implications of the participation mantra, the ongoing digital transformation, the advent of innovation labs or the recent emphasis on co-creation and ecosystem change.

Daniela Sangiorgi

PhD in Design, Daniela is Associate Professor at the Design Department of Politecnico di Milano. She has been one of the first researchers investigating the area of Service Design. She worked for eight years at the research group Imagination at Lancaster University (UK). Her research theme is the role of design for service innovation and development, with a particular focus on the public sector. She is contributing to the establishment of a multidisciplinary understanding of Service Design within the wider field of Service Research; recent research projects are focusing on the transformation of mental healthcare in Italy. She is a member of the International Society of Service Innovation Professionals (ISSIP), a committee member of the Service Design and Innovation conference (ServDes) and a member of the SIG on Design Lead Innovation of the International Research Society for Public Management (IRSPM).

In the Studia Generalia design professionals tell about their career and share the insight from the present state of their field and the future visions. Lectures are targeted to design students and teachers and designing for public sector transformation lecture is a part of Design lecture series held in fall 2019.
