Laurea to join a European cyber-security project
European Commission gives the green light to Horizon 2020 project.
Laurea will participate in a large cyber-security project that received funding in August from the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 research programme. The Commission has invited the project consortium to contract negotiations, and the project will be launched in early 2019.
The provisional budget of the four-year project amounts to nearly 20 million euros. Laurea’s share of funding is approximately half a million euros. The project involves 30 partners in all, and it is coordinated by the Belgian Royal Military Academy.
- The goal is to set up a European cyber-security competence network, bringing together several parties from various fields of security, especially from critical infrastructure, explains Kirsi Hyttinen, Senior Manager for Research at Laurea, who has been in charge of project preparations.
Laurea’s field of responsibility in the project includes conducting research from the perspective of information technology and organising pilot workshops. The project will conclude with an assessment of the project’s social impact. The objective is to create a preventive system to better prepare for different types of cyber threats.
- The present challenge in the field of cyber security is the inability to deal with all threats due to the lack of an effective toolbox and training for parties in different sectors. This project aims to link experts and different fields of competence to develop products and services for present and future needs, describes Hyttinen.
