Recognizing Prior Learning as Part of your Studies (RPL)

Before actually starting your studies, you should take a moment to consider if you might already have some competence that matches the learning outcomes for which your degree aims. See the objectives of your degree programme in the curriculum and compare those to your current competences.

Your earlier competences can be taken into account in the following ways:

  • Competences which are equivalent to the degree requirements can be recognized as part of the core competence studies
  • Any other higher education level competences which do not match the degree requirements, can be included in the complementary competence studies if you wish.

As you start your studies, you will have an opportunity to discuss these questions with the guidance specialists at your campus. You are advised to apply for the recognition of compulsory studies at the beginning of your studies because it might shorten your study time.

Each student has a named tutor teacher, and for the Social Services students starting studies in autumn 2025, the tutor teachers are Henna Jalasmäki and Sonja Kukkonen. The Head of Students’ Affairs is Ms. Riikka Mulder. Together the tutor teachers and the head of students’ affairs plan and decide which prior studies the student can have recognized. However, prior to this the student must request for the recognition. Here are the instructions, how that is done.

You will need to look up the Laurea UAS, Degree Programme in Social Services curriculum starting autumn 2025. There you can see the goals and content of each study unit. Therefore, what you need to do, is look through your prior studies in university or university of applied sciences and consider which Laurea Social Services study units have the same or similar goals and content. Then write a short explanation or description of competence, how you have accomplished the required skills and knowledge. You need to do this for every study unit you want to have recognized. Please compile them into one word-document.

You also need to attach a clear copy of the certificates/transcripts of your prior studies. The documents need to be in Finnish or in English. If they are not issued in Finnish or English, they must be officially translated to English, so we can also compare the study units and courses. Also, pay attention to the study credits that you have completed before vs. how many study credits the study unit or part of a study unit is in Laurea. You are obliged to demonstrate the comparability of your earlier studies completed abroad with the Finnish education ‎system. In Laurea UAS we calculate, that 1cr (ECTS) = 27 hours of student’s work.

Your recognition of prior learning document together with your higher education transcripts should be sent by e-mail to the tutor teachers Henna Jalasmäki and Sonja Kukkonen and the Head of the Students’ affairs Riikka Mulder a week beofre studies begin. This way the tutors will have time to read the documents and compare your prior studies to the current Laurea Social Services study units.
